I like reading the newspaper as well as a couple of hundred blogs and old collector editions of Assimov’s and Analog’s. In most cases, I tend to stick to the Daily Telegraph, where I came across this little gem.
In a nutshell, “Checking your work emails before bed on any electronic device is essentially the equivalent of drinking a double espresso last thing at night,” said Dr Chris Idzikowski of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre.
Strange how I never linked the two together: insomnia and sitting on the laptop. I invariably check my mail, read a last few blogs before I tuck away for the night, or check stats on the latest projects, etc. But it seems once distracted, I get into an hour past the time I meant to get to bed – and then can’t sleep.
Funny how xkcd picked up on the trend, too:
I am not sure whether I can doze off knowing I haven’t followed my ritual – I might shift it an hour earlier, I guess.
On the other hand, I question why do I need coffee to stay awake at work if I am staring at a screen all day? 😉
How about you guys? Problems sleeping because you are too busy catching up on the net?
